    Photographs by Emery Roth II

The Sharon Historical Society is pleased to announce the opening of the newest exhibit in the museum's Hallway Gallery, "Farm II: Ancient Farmsteads of the Berkshire, Taconic, and Hudson Hills" photographs by Emery Roth II. The exhibit will open to the public on Tuesday, August 3. An exhibit reception will be held on Saturday August 7, from 5-7 pm at the museum. The exhibit runs through September 17.

Emery Roth has been walking the Northwest Hills and making photographic images of farms for five years. He is drawn to the architectural forms of the old farmsteads, the roll of the hills and fields in which they are set and the patina of hard work and age that settles over a well-used farm. He admires the craftsmanship of old barns and practicality of their design and his photographs seek to capture the beauty and mystery of time and continuity of lives lived on the farm. This exhibition picks up where an exhibition this spring at the Gunn Library, in Washington Depot, left off. The exhibit will include photographs and excerpts of poetry and prose from his daily photographic journals.

Mr. Roth studied both design and literature at Carnegie-Mellon University, earning a Bachelor of Architecture and a Masters in English. After working briefly designing theatrical environments he taught English at Waltham, MA, and at Shepaug Valley Regional High School. When he retired five years ago after thirty years of teaching he was director of computer education for the Shepaug District. Mr. Roth has been shooting photos since he was a child, but the digital darkroom inside his computer had rekindled his love of photography. He is a partner with his daughter, Melissa Cherniske, in Lenscapes, LLC, a thriving portrait photography business specializing in family, children and teens. Together they lead photography field trips and run photo and computer workshops.
